Outstanding 50-Year Lawyer Award
March 1, 2013
In a ceremony set for June 21, Senior Partner John Eckel will be awarded the Outstanding 50-Year Lawyer Award by the Texas Bar Foundation. A native of Houston and a graduate of Princeton University, John worked in Alaska for a year following his graduation from the University of Texas School of Law in 1961, then returned to Galveston and has worked for Mills Shirley ever since. A partner since 1965, John became one of the firm’s premier trial lawyers during the years when lawyers tried far more cases than they do today. John is a Life Fellow in both the American Bar Foundation and the Texas Bar Foundation, and has been selected for inclusion several times as a Texas Super Lawyer. John has served the Galveston community on the Sealy & Smith Foundation Board since 1991, and the Galveston Wharves Board, serving as Chair in 2009. He is an active member in the Moody Memorial First United Methodist Church of Galveston. The firm congratulates John on receiving this award in recognition of his actions and adherence to the highest principles and traditions of the legal profession and service to the public.
